IME Nepal Literature Festival
The only international literary festival in the country to run for eight consecutive editions, the IME Nepal Literature Festival is a playground for authors, thinkers and literature connoisseurs.

Aahuti is a writer, Dalit activist, and a political leader. His Nepalma Varnabyabastaa Ra Barga Sangharsha (The Varna System and Class Struggle in Nepal) is considered a significant resource on the caste and class system of Nepal. Also a critical and respected political and social analyst, his works include Tapasika Geetharu, Skhalan, Gahungoro Africa, and Naya Ghar.

Ajapa Sharma is a doctoral student in the Department of History at the University of Illinois at Chicago where she works on ideas of self, family and nation in early twentieth century South Asia. She has been affiliated with the CET-University of Wisconsin Academic Program in India and is deeply invested in teaching in diverse and multicultural environments. She is the co-founding editor of Mithia Review, a journal of international science fiction and fantasy.

Amar Nyaupane
A recipient of Nepal’s most acclaimed literary award, Madan Puraskar, for his novel Seto Dharti, Amar Nyaupane is best known as a novelist and short story writer. His first published work, ‘Paaniko Ghaam’, won the Padma Shree Sahitya Samman award; while Seto Dharti also bagged the Ramraja Panta Smriti Puraskar. Nyaupane has the novel ‘Karodaun Kasturi’, and most recently, a young-adult novel, ‘Gulabi Umer’, to his credit.

A theatre actor and director with over three decades of experience in the field, Anup Baral has a post-graduate degree in dramatic arts with specialization in acting from the National School of Drama, New Delhi, India. He has designed and directed more than two dozen full-length plays, including Court Martial, Mahabhoj, Thangla, and more than a hundred street and village dramas. He has also acted in many major roles (Hamlet in "Hamlet", Lopakhin in " The Cherry Orchard”, Pozzo in “Waiting for Godot”, Jason in “Medea”, Stephan in “The Justice”, Gyan Bhikchhu in "Fire in The Monastery", etc.) He is the artistic director at Actors’ Studio, a theatre organization that he founded in 2006. It runs a three-month interdisciplinary acting course.

Arunava Sinha translates classic, modern and contemporary Bengali fiction and non-fiction into English. Over forty-five of his translations have been published so far. Twice the winner of the Crossword Translation Award, for Sankar’s Chowringhee (2007) and Anita Agnihotri’s Seventeen (2011), he has also won the Muse India Award for translation for When the Time Is Right (2012) and been shortlisted for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize (2009) for his translation of Chowringhee. He was born and grew up in Kolkata and lives and writes in New Delhi. His translation of There’s Gunpowder in the Air is on the shortlist of this year’s DSC prize.

An Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, Tribhuvan University, Nepal, Dr. Basanta Gautam has a Phd from Chubu University, Japan. In his capacity as an Associate Professor engineering, Dr. Gautam is engaged in pedagogic activities and research of various universities in Nepal with a permanent base at Tribhuvan University. Engineering and university level education is only a part of his life, though. He writes regularly about technology and its effect on society, child care and child education, teaching in mother tongue, etc. He maintains a parenting blog, which is based on his experiences of parenting his daughter. He is also actively involved in SAMAJIK SHIKSHA NEPALIMA (‘Social Education in Nepali’) and other social movements and organizations. He is also a poet and has published an anthology of poems.

She had played an instrumental role in persuading the Paswan community of Sarlahi to give up thievery that they were traditionally involved in, providing technical education to 50 Madeshi Dalits and helping around 600 Dalit women to earn a livelihood.

Hon. Dr. Binda Pandey, a Member of the Parliament, is also the chairperson of the Fundamental Rights & Directive Principle Committee of the Constituent Assembly of Nepal. Her book, ‘Women in Nepali Politics’, was launched early this year, and the Nepali version is set to be released soon. Active in Nepal’s trade union movement for over a decade, Pandey was a driving force in General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT), one of the largest confederations of Nepalese trade unions. Hon. Pandey is better known as a champion of gender equality. Hon. Pandey has worked as a program coordinator for the Committee for Asian Women – Regional Labor, an NGO based in Hong Kong, and has gained considerable knowledge and experience of the challenges faced by working women throughout Asia. She has worked for the National Women’s Commission formed by the Government of Nepal, and was also an active member of the All Nepal Women Association.

Carmen Wickramagamage is Professor in English and Head of the Department of English at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. She holds a PhD in English from the University of Hawaii, USA, for her work on exploring the uneasy alliances between postcolonial theory, feminism and ‘Third World’ women writers, focusing on the works of two South Asian women writers. She counts among her publications essays and articles on literature produced in postcolonial spaces and on themes relating to these spaces. In addition to writing on literature in English, she also translates from Sinhala into English. Her translation of a Sinhala novel into English, Sunethra Rajakarunanayake’s Podu Purushaya translated into English as Metta: A Story about Love, won the State Literary Award for the Best Translation of a Work of Fiction into English. She is a jury member of DSC prize 2019.

A jury member of this year’s DSC prize, he currently works as a contributing editor of an international project based in Stockholm for writing a history of World Literature.

Itisha Giri is a Nepali poet and editor based in Madrid. While her poetry privileges social engagement, it also tries to make sense of her identities and how they are related to a sense of place and belonging. Giri’s poems have appeared in literary magazines and anthologies such as La.Lit, The House of Snow, and Poesia de la Mediterrània. She has been a visiting poet at the International Festival of Poetry in Mallorca and was recently invited to participate in the International Poetry Translation Residency in Galicia. She is the editor of These Fine Lines, an anthology of poems written by women who explore their female experiences within the spectrum of abandon and restraint. She is also the co-creator and producer of Boju Bajai, a monthly feminist podcast that works towards facilitating a wider dialogue around the portrayal and representation of women in Nepal’s public space.

He co-authored Social Impact of Remittance in Terai, a book based on qualitative research. His latest book is Nepali Upanyasma Basainsarai: Dukhadekhi Dukhasamma.

The album is the output of her research on the singing tradition of the Limbu Vedic chants and repartee between boys and girls, which form an important part of the Limbu musical culture.

Leading Nepali Actor and Producer Karishma Manandhar began her career in the movie industry at the age of 16, in the movie ‘Santaan.’ She reigned for nearly three decades as an actor, appearing in over 70 movies. She also turned producer with movies like ‘Dhukdhuki’ and ‘Babu Saheb.’ She was honored as ‘Popular Actress of the Decade’ and also awarded the prestigious Gorkha Dakshin Bahu Fourth, a government recognition. An architect engineer and former secretary, Kishore Thapa has a master’s degree in Urban Planning and has had leading roles in the road widening drive in Kathmandu and expediting the Melamchi Drinking Water project. Krishna Khanal was Professor of Political Science at Tribhuvan University from 1979 to 2010. He also served as Executive Director of the Centre for Nepal and Asian Studies, Tribhuvan University (1994–95) and as adviser to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala (1999). He was born in the mid-fifties in Barishal, Bangladesh. His family migrated to West Bengal when he was three. They were first resettled in Bankura at the Shiromanipur Refugee camp. Later, they were forced to shift to the Gholadoltala Refugee Camp, 24 Parganas, and lived there till 1969. However, Byapari had to leave home at the age of fourteen to do odd jobs. At age twenty-four, he came into contact with the Naxals and with the famous labour activist Shankar Guha Niyogi, founder of the Chhattisgarh Mukti Morcha at the Dalli Rajhara Mines. He was sent to jail during this time, where he taught himself to read and write. Later, while working as a rickshaw puller in Kolkata, Byapari had a chance meeting with Mahasweta Devi, who urged him to write for her journal Bartika. He has published ten novels and over fifty short stories since. Until recently he was working as a cook with the Hellen Keller Institute for the Deaf and Blind in West Bengal. His novel There’s Gunpowder in the Air is shortlisted for this year’s DSC prize.

Dr. Sanduk Ruit is an award-winning Nepali eye surgeon whose small-incision cataract surgery, which utilizes inexpensive intraocular lenses, has enabled hundreds of thousands of poor cataract patients in Nepal and other countries to regain their sight. Over the last three decades, he has successfully treated over 100,000 people across the developing world, and has been feted all around the world for this astonishing accomplishment. In 2018, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, its fourth highest civilian award. He has previously been awarded Ramon Magsaysay and Nepal’s Prime Minister’s National Talent Award.
