One immediately falls in love with this city, which is characteristically cosmopolitan, yet charmingly laidback.

Things that Pokhara is famous for:

Mountains: The city offers a stunning view of the whole Annapurna range, including the fist-tailed Machhapuchchhre, which is barely 20 kilometres away as the crow flies.

Lakes: Also known as the city of lakes, Pokhara has seven of these. The most famous is Fewa, followed by Begnas and Rupa. Fewa is the second largest lake in the country after Rara. While Begnas and Rupa are tucked away in quiet corners of the city and offer a perfect nature retreat, Fewa is where most of the action happens. Its eastern shore is known as Baidam or Lakeside, which the Lonely Planet Guide says, “is a chilled-out version of Kathmandu’s Thamel neighbourhood, stretching along the shore of a tranquil lake with bobbing paddle boats.”

Barahi and Bindhabasini Temples: These are two of the most important religious monuments in Pokhara. The Barahi Temple is in the middle of the Fewa Lake while the Bindhabasini Temple is on a hillock in the old bazaar, known as Mohariya Tole. Both temples are devoted to Goddesses representing female Shakti (power).

Devi’s Fall: Located on the outskirts of Pokhara, this waterfall, also known as Patale Chhango, marks the point where the water coming from the Fewa Lake disappears underground, only to re-emerge 500 metres or so downstream. In the monsoon, when the stream is at full bore, the sound of the water cascading down is deafening.

Sarangkot: Tucked on a mountain ridge at an altitude of 1600 metres, the place is famous for sunrise and sunset views. It also provides stunning views of the Annapurna range, the city of Pokhara and the Fewa Lake.

Shanti Stupa: Shanti Stupa is a pagoda-style monument perched on a hill overlooking the Fewa Lake and the Annapurna range.

Adventure sports: Of late, Pokhara has emerged as an exciting place for adventure sports, like paragliding, parahawking, zip flying, ultralight flying, canyoning, bungee jumping, hand gliding, etc.
